Hazel Hutchins

Authors’ Booking Service is pleased to announce that children’s author Hazel Hutchins is available for one week of school/library visits in any single rural or urban centre in Ontario.

Her rate is $250 plus HST per session, four sessions per day. Travel expenses from Alberta are in addition to the above amount however there can be considerable negotiation if billeting is possible and if four or more full days are booked.

With over 40 titles – from picture books to junior, middle and YA novels – Hazel is a versatile presenter. She is a member of The Writers' Union of Canada, and so schools wishing to invite her may be eligible for a travel and fee subsidy to off-set the cost of her visit. Contact us for details of this program.

Here’s what Teacher-Librarian Patricia Farley of the Calgary Public School Board has to say:

With her wide-range of award-winning literature, Hazel's appeal to various age groups is unique. From picture books to early chapter books to novels for accomplished readers, there is something for each reader/writer to choose from. It was wonderful to be able to offer such a variety of Canadian stories to our children and then to have them interact with the author at their level of interest.

And from Janice Reynolds of The Near North District School Board, Ontario

We were delighted with the quality of her presentations. She has the ability to make her presentations both educational and entertaining; the students enjoyed her upbeat, energetic style while learning about the writing process. The rapport that she developed with them during her presentations has translated into an enthusiasm for reading and writing stories.

Presentation Details

As an experienced author, I have been delighted to receive regular invitations to present at schools, libraries and conferences across Canada.

Presentations (grades K- 6. Suggested maximum of 110 per session but flexible as necessary)

This is a lively author visit that will pass along enthusiasm for reading and writing to students of all ages. Using examples from my own work, topics include getting ideas and helping them to grow, creating characters, finding great endings, the difficult magic of rewriting, the reward of unusual research and working with an illustrator. For older students there will be greater discussion of story process. For the youngest crowd there will be chants, finger plays and story involvement. Questions are encouraged throughout and are used as a springboard to further discussion as student attention allows.

Because I enjoy the close contact with the students, I am most comfortable in a classroom, library or music room. When required, however, I can also present in an auditorium or gymnasium so long as a microphone, screen and extension cord are available. I will bring my own projector.

Creative Writing Workshops (maximum 25 participants or one class; grades 3 - 6)

In class exercises that help to focus student attention on such topics as character, dialogue, emotion and story structure.
