Nancy's Presentation Details
The
first time I saw my name in print I was in grade two and had just
published a poem in the high school year book. I've never
forgotten
the thrill of that moment. It was then that I decided to be a
writer
and even though I've taken a few different roads (including acting and
teaching) along the way, I've finally arrived where I always wanted to
be! I show students how their own life experiences can contribute
to
their creativity and encourage them to follow their dreams. I
talk
about how stories are all around us and I describe how I got the idea
for my first book, The Scream of
the Hawk, from the big,
spooky house right down the street. I follow with a book-talk (in
which I become a character from Scream
of the Hawk and talk in
her voice), a short reading and a
Q&A session (during
which I show an edited manuscript, drawings sent to me from children
who have read the book and a picture of the actual "spooky" house that
inspired the setting). Presentations last about 50 minutes to one
hour. I distribute an autographed postcard or bookmark at the
conclusion of my presentation. A book signing can be arranged if
desired.
My
presentation is geared for grades 3-6, however I have also spoken to
high school students. I can customize my remarks depending on the
ages
and the purpose of my presentation. I have conducted writing
workshops
as well, visiting schools over a two day period, spending time in
individual classrooms and working with students on aspects of writing
such as plot, setting and characterization. These workshops can
also
be conducted for smaller groups and scheduled over a half or full
day.
I will present to grades 3-12
(With preference for 3-6)
Maximum number of students per session: 75-100.
I
am willing to be flexible on audience size and have done larger groups
of up to 150, but have not found this to be best in terms of connecting
with the children.
I offer writing workshops for grades 3-6.
Maximum participants for workshop: 15
I also offer...
Professional Development Workshops.
I am comfortable in a classroom, library, auditorium or gymnasium.
For my current presentations, I require only a table at the front of
the room and, for larger groups, a microphone.
