Claire Eamer (Gabriola Island, BC) (Silver Birch Non-fiction)

Writers Union member. Middle grade nonfiction, mainly science and history, and picture books. Winner of the Science in Society Youth Book Award, the Lane Anderson Award, and the Red Cedar Information Book Award.

Claire’s rate is $300 for one session, $550 for two, $750 for three, and $900 for four, plus HST. She is now booking GTA visits for May 1-18, 2018.

Claire grew up in Saskatoon and has lived in a variety of places, including about 30 years in the Yukon. She currently lives on an island in the Salish Sea. She is a professional writer who has worked as a freelance and staff journalist in print and radio, trade book editor, science writer and editor, and English instructor.

About Claire's Presentations

I present to preschool to adult, depending on the topic.

I prefer a maximum of about 40 so that the presentation can be informal and interactive. For a workshop-style presentation, a single class or a maximum of 20 adults works best.

Equipment and other requirements: Projector for Power Point presentations. A small table to hold books and presentation props. I request that a librarian, teacher, or other school representative be present throughout the presentation.

Available Presentations

For preschool and primary grades: Based on my picture book Underneath the Sidewalk. I tell the kids about the things that led me to write the story – my own fear of monsters in the dark when I was small and a little boy who was afraid of falling through the cracks in the sidewalk. We talk about what’s scary, and then read the story. If there’s time, we do an art project (either as a group or individually, depending on time and resources), creating both scary and silly monsters.

For middle grades: My presentations for middle-grade kids are based on the theme of one of my non-fiction books, combining computer slides, hands-on props, readings of short sections, and discussion of the ideas and the research involved.

I am currently featuring presentations on the two most recent non-fiction books:

  • Garbage, Waste, and What To Do About It: based on What a Waste! Where Does Garbage Go? The approach of the book is a mix of science, history, and social studies (what’s happening now around the world), with a focus on problems and solutions. I tell the audience about some of the surprising things I learned about garbage, both past and present – some of them delightfully gross. Then we turn to discussing the world immediately around us, based on the “Discard Dare” at the end of the book. We list how many things in school or at home (depending on the presentation setting) are designed to be thrown away – and we swap ideas about how to reduce the amount of stuff that becomes garbage.
  • The Human Microbiome: based on Inside Your Insides: A Guide to the Microbes That Call You Home (Kids Can Press, 2016). Using computer slides with both the cartoon images from the book and actual images of microorganisms, as well as some hands-on props, I tell the kids about the invisible world that lives on and in them and both the good and the bad things microbes do. I finish by talking about some of the latest information about the importance of a diverse microbiome and ways to keep your microbiome healthy (eat your veggies and play with animals!).

Workshop

Writing Non-fiction – How to Get Started: This is planned as a half-day workshop, running 2 to 3 hours, depending on the time available and the age group. It’s suitable for upper levels of the middle grades, high school, or adults. We work through three steps: (1) Coming up with a non-fiction idea; (2) Finding the focus and planning the approach; (3) Researching the topic. For the adult version of the workshop, I also discuss possible markets and how to approach publishers with a non-fiction book idea. The workshop emphasizes discussion and short writing exercises. Participants should come away with an idea for a book, essay, or article and a sense of how to move on to the next stage.
